COVID-19 Infection Control in Dentistry Small Changes = Big Difference

Managing safety during COVID-19 has been challenging for all employers.  When dental practices began resuming business several months ago, safety was at the forefront.  Now, we are seeing some of those safety policies falling by the wayside.  Those small changes can make a big difference when it comes to staff and patient safety.   Now is not the time to let your guard down!

Here are some safety policies that need to continue in order to reduce the spread of viruses such as COVID-19:

  • Consistently screen patients and staff before and during arrival. Don't rely on temperature checks as the only screening activity.
  • Unless adequate physical distancing can be accomplished, don’t re-open waiting rooms.
  • Wear respirators rather than surgical masks for aerosol generating procedures.
  • Meet OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard for medical questionnaires and fit testing.
  • Follow safe practices for the storage and re-use of respirators.
  • Do not take scrubs and gownsthat are considered PPE, home for laundering.

The actions of staff outside of the practice can have a huge impact on everyone’s safety.  It is important to reinforce safe behaviors such as wearing masks, avoiding gatherings, and practicing proper hand hygiene.  Remind staff that by putting themselves at risk of contracting this disease, they could potentially bring it into the practice.
