This year's annual OSAP Conference was a wonderful gathering of dental industry enthusiasts held at the stunning Westin La Paloma Resort in Tucson, Arizona. The event provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with colleagues, old friends, and meet new faces who are equally passionate about infection control in dentistry.

Picture yourself surrounded by brilliant minds, absorbing their wealth of knowledge and staying at the forefront of the ever-evolving landscape of dentistry. This is the essence of the OSAP Conference – an exceptional opportunity for connection, learning, and personal development. Rest assured, the 2024 conference surpassed all expectations, and I am excited to share some of the event's highlights.

The Unveiling: From OSAP to ADS

OSAP made the decision to revamp its brand identity to better align with its core values, vision, and dedication to its members and stakeholders. The new name captures the essence of the organization's mission and goals for the future. The transition from OSAP to ADS (Association for Dental Safety) was a monumental moment during the conference, symbolizing a pivotal shift towards advancing dental safety practices. It marked the beginning of a new era where a united front of industry professionals would work together to elevate standards, enhance patient care, and prioritize infection control in dentistry.

Let's talk about water......dental water that is.

Discussions and presentations surrounding dental unit waterlines took center stage at this year's conference. From the preconference meeting on Wednesday to the engaging tabletop clinics on Saturday afternoon, the emphasis and sheer number of presentations about dental unit waterlines was truly shocking (pun intended). From the importance of regular monitoring and maintenance to updates from the CDC, the conversations around dental unit waterlines were enlightening and eye-opening for all who attended. Honestly, it was refreshing to see such passion around this important topic. With the growing awareness, I am optimistic that diseases and harm caused by contaminated waterlines will become a thing of the past.

Tabletop Clinic

One of the standout highlights of the conference was the debut of OSAP/ADS's inaugural tabletop clinics. Alongside Monica Satake, President of True North Training and Consulting, I had the privilege of leading a hands-on clinic focused on streamlining dental unit waterline safety protocols. By simplifying intricate product instructions, we aimed to empower attendees with practical knowledge and insights. The experience of collaborating and sharing expertise with fellow industry enthusiasts was truly fulfilling, embodying the spirit of unity within the dental community. Monica and I were able to help attendees in real time develop and personalize their safe water protocol. It was a blast and very rewarding.

Courageous Conversations

To top it off, I had the pleasure of listening to the remarkable Katherine Eitel Belt from LionSpeak, who captivated attendees with her insightful strategies for navigating conflicts with positivity, seeking clarity, and igniting a sense of inspiration to become a transformative force for good in our world. Her words resonated deeply, leaving me feeling not only invigorated but also empowered with a renewed sense of purpose and optimism for the future. It was a truly enlightening and uplifting experience that fueled our passion for making a positive impact in the dental community and beyond.
