Dental Labs Affected By OSHA Emphasis Program Targeting Silica Exposure

Written by Mary Bartlett | Jul 29, 2022 1:28:54 PM

Federal OSHA has had an emphasis on silica exposure for some time now, but some regions are continuing with this focus.

One is Region 8 which covers Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. Dental laboratories are in the high-risk classification so they are on the list for inspections. Cutting stone and stone products are the emphasis. Employers who require workers to perform tasks where respirable crystalline silica is in use must have a Respirable Silica Exposure Control Plan, assess the hazards, and take steps to eliminate or minimize the hazard. Contact SafeLink Consulting if you need assistance with this program.

Oregon OSHA has launched a free online training course on silica hazards for Spanish-speaking workers. The training is at osha.oregon.gov/edu/courses/espanol/Pages/silica-online-course.aspx.

State of Washington is proposing legislation that would restore their regulations requiring employers to establish practices intended to prevent work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The bill has moved to the state Senate, where it passed the Labor, Commerce and Tribal Affairs Committee and was sent to the Rules Committee for a second reading. It is now awaiting comments by the public.
